Introduction
Welcome to a series of units on the study of fish for middle school science.
These units will provide a thread that spirals through grades 6, 7, and
8 to unify earth, life, and physical science concepts. All of the lessons
focus on the study of biodiversity and science careers. Biodiversity is
a critical component of the Gateway Learning Expectations for the state
of Tennessee that will be assessed when students take Biology for high
school credit. Students must pass the Gateway exam to received a high
school diploma, therefore it is critical that students are proficient
in the skills included in these units. Fish studies are just one topic
that could be used to learn and reinforce these skills. The lessons focus
on careers in science. Learn about what real scientists do: hydrologist,
ichthyologist, paleontologist, geologist, nature conservationist, science
writer, and artist.
