Developing Differentiated Instruction for Diverse Learners

Crafting a Differentiation Quilt

The differentiation quilt brings together an understanding of our student ’s learning styles and abilities while managing materials and giving each student what is appropriate to their level. The patchwork mirrors the diversity of our students while the shapes of individual pieces blend to make a beautiful design. Our quilt reflects a curriculum that imbeds the state standards and local requirements. The selection of textures and colors of each fabric piece shows how the lessons modify the content, process, and products to meet the needs of every student. The teacher stitches each patch in a way that the whole design is more effective than the single parts.

Workshop Description

The series of workshops and activities covers methods and strategies appropriate for teaching high ability and diverse students in mixed ability settings. The content will center on materials and procedures useful in understanding the nature and needs of high ability students and for modifying the curriculum in the regular classroom. The participants will investigate and increase an awareness of how to differentiate instruction and promote flexible grouping and tiered assignments. Participants will have time set aside for reflecting on learning and building collegial relationships.

Goal
The goal for the staff development activity conducted by consultants from Dragonfly Enterprises is for general education faculty at Florence County School District #3 to learn more about differentiating instruction for students in mixed ability classrooms.

Participants will learn to:

Recognize the needs of gifted students when designing differentiated curriculum, modified instruction, and varied materials.
Use major curriculum models for delivery of service for differentiated instruction.
Design lesson plans for students that differentiate by readiness, interest, and learning needs.
Develop management systems for flexible grouping and tiered assignments.
Provide independent research opportunities for gifted students.
Develop questioning strategies and activities that differentiate instruction.
Share lesson plans and units of instruction that include a variety of methods for differentiating instruction in a regular classroom.
