Earth forces: Plate Tectonics
Plate tectonics is the theory of how the continents
drift on a liquid mantel of the Earth. Mounting evidence
of research supports this theory.
Activity # 3
Explain the critical importance of tectonic plate
activity in the formation of the landforms of Tennessee.
Do you think Tennessee is at risk for earthquakes? Call
on personal experience and observations to corroborate
your explanations. Use the book Our Restless Earth,
as a reference for this assignment.
Tennessee is a good example of how Earth forces have
been at work for millions of years. From Reelfoot Lake to
the Smoky Mountains, continental drift has been shaping
our state. Look at aerial photographs and read articles
to get an overview of these dynamic processes. Explain
how mountains, volcanoes and earthquakes are
manifestations of tectonic plate activity.
