Teaching American History: Tennessee River Valley Consortium (TRVC)
Implemented by the East Tennessee Historical Society and Loudon County Schools
Abstract
Currently entering the fourth year of two consecutive grants from the US Department of Education, TRVC offers professional development for practicing teachers as well as pre-service teachers. The project activities will provide both American history content and pedagogy. The focus is on four goals: (1) to increase teachers' knowledge of American history content; (2) to increase teachers' use of primary materials, local history resources, and technology in history instruction; (3) to increase students' understanding of and skill level in American history; and (4) to build capacity of school districts to integrate American history in-service system-wide. The centerpiece of the project design is a series of academic year mini-institutes and methods workshops with classroom follow-up provided by a Traveling Teacher in year three. Also featured are content sessions and summer institutes for master/mentor teachers--culminating in the design of training modules for system and school level in-services. Additional project activities will be National History Day workshops, development of the project's signature History Curriculum Kits, and the project website. Dragonfly Enterprises provides the external evaluation for the TRVC program.
