Using the Earth to teach us lessons about other planets

Marilynn Duran, Toni Peterson, Judy Butler, and Todd Gary

Travel through a wormhole to mystery Planet-214. Analyze your samples of rocks and minerals to discover if there is life on that world.

Participants will take a simulated trip through the "stargate" to collect rocks on another planet (P-214). This Astrobiology session will provide exciting ways to integrate Earth and space science in the classroom curriculum. The rock cycle and plate tectonics will be explored through hands on activities. Teachers will learn about Earth processes and compare them to the process on Mars, Saturn's moon Titan, and the moons of Jupiter, Europa and Io. Teachers will be given NASA materials that include posters of Mars, Europa, Io, and a broad array of classroom activities and visual materials.

This session will provide an exciting way to present the rock cycle and Earth processes by engaging students in hands on activities and creating strong foundations in Earth and space science.
